Robotic space surgery refined for earth use
The Robot Assisted Microsurgery (RAMS) system was developed to allow a surgeon on the ground to perform remote controlled emergency surgery on astronauts through the use of cameras and sensors that transfer the feel of a procedure through the controls. The system, however, has proven a boon even to doctors in the same room as their patient because the computer filters the surgeon's movements, bringing a level of precision that human hands, especially in extended surgeries, are incapable of attaining at this time. The RAMS device was created by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is being developed for more widespread use.
