RIM licenses JPEG compression tech
Research in Motion (RIM), manufacturer of the Blackberry handheld devices, backed down in a legal battle with Forgent. RIM agreed to license JPEG image data compression technology, which was patented by Forgent under patent number 4,698,672. While the validity of patent is still being widely disputed around the world, Forgent said that it is currently in litigation against approximately 40 companies "for infringement of the ’672 patent."
According to the company "more than 40" different companies in Asia, Europe and the United States currently pay royalties to Forgent. Detailed amounts have not been disclosed, but Forgent says it has collected more than $100 million "primarily" from JPEG licensing fees since the firm’s inception about 3 years ago.
