RIAA licenses Web radio start-up
Having won legal battles against unauthorized distributors of music, the Recording Industry Association of America is expanding its own approved distribution channels. A new agreement establishes fees that San Francisco-based Kickworks will pay in return for the rights to the recordings of the RIAA's member artists. Kickworks will, in turn, provide software that allows customers to enter the Internet radio business themselves. According to CNET News, the company intends to provide the service at no cost, paying for the music through the insertion of commercials between songs.
