Las Vegas Airport switches to RFID luggage tags
McCarran Airport in Las Vegas Nevada is switching to an RFID luggage tracking system designed to reduce the number of lost bags. Three carriers : Alaska, AirTran and Champion have started placing RFID tags onto luggage tags.
RFID sensors can read the new tags whether upside-down or turned sideways and they also do not require line of sight - something that can’t be said about traditional bar-coded tags.
In the second quarter of 2006 all 30 carriers will move to the new system. Airport officials claim that the system has been 99.5 percent accurate.
