Asus PCs Found to More Reliable Than Macs

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

As faithful Tom's Hardware readers, we're certain that you're able to handle most casual computer problems. Those who need help with their personal computers, however, seem to have a fewest issues with Asus PCs.

According to Rescuecom's Computer Reliability Report, Asus took the title of having the most reliable computers for the second time in a row for the firm's studies. Asus scored better numbers than Apple, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba and HP/Compaq, in that order.

Asus took top marks earlier this year year but Rescuecom was unsure if its reliability statistics were accurate due to inflated shipment number thanks to the rising popularity of Eee PC netbooks.

David A. Milman, Rescuecom's founder and CEO, explained "Because Asus just introduced the newest version of the Eee laptop last fall, the original predicted computer reliability of this laptop has been somewhat up in the air. However, a good eight months later, we're still receiving the fewest calls for computer repair and support with Asus, while their market share is increasing, adding the Eee desktop to their line as well, indicating that this PC is continuing to prove itself in terms of computer reliability."

The scores are calculated by comparing the number of computers shipped from a particular company with the number of computer repair and service calls Rescuecom handles relative to that company's computers. The following data was used to calculate reliability scores for the Computer Reliability Report, 2Q 2009.

Of course, these scores only account for the number of tech support calls relative to new computers shipped during that particular period. The numbers may not account for problems dealing with those specific, newly purchased machines, or users who opt for company provided tech support, such as Applecare. Of course, the more you ship, the more potential problems there will be--just look at HP.

Ooooh thats gotta sting for Mac Fanboys. Hehe nah I'd say Macs are still more reliable but who gives a shit, buy a big bulletproof 100 year warranty with all the money you save by going PC.

Hmmmm that probably says more about people in general who own macs than the macs themselves!

Surely Apples score is hugely inflated because more people are going to take their Apple to an Apple store to get fixed, Asus don't stores so you'd have to seek thrid party advice.

Well it just proves how useless these "stats" actually are...
Considering that Asus is not as popular as other brands there is a higher chance of them being more reliable due to a snaller number of people using their hardware...

On the other side they compare computers and relicts that do not have all the necessary keys, buttons, drives, options, upgrades, etc and claim that they are second most reliable brand... They might have as well put C64 in those stats - same thing. Why people still compare apple-crap with decent computers? They don't have most of the issues due to lack of hardware or software supporting it - PC market is showing the path and irons out all the bugs with new technologies... If someone would compare the "reliability" of a product from 2004 against product from 2009 - I bet the old one would be more reliable - it's bloody obvious. If someone would be crazy enough to build computers with Celerons or SDR memory modules in it, using IDE and a selection of one or two GPUs - guess how reliable would that be? Rock solid - as long as they don't tell you the obvious - sorry mate, you cannot do anything with it. It's closed architecture... So closed in fact that if something breaks down - you gotta bring ot over to us and wait until we get it sorted... Ehhh... bollocks.

I have an ASUS laptop - it's amazing. Well, except the 64 bit support on my model was lacking, but, that's my own fault and I got around that. It hasn't screwed up, in fact I'm using it now.
But, ASUS desktop motherboards suck hardcore. I've yet to have one that didn't break.
Oh yeah, as for Apple, they have very centralised tech support, which helps their numbers. But, I don't buy into the idea that either ASUS or Apple buyers will be more tech savvy.

I'm still using my 3 year old asus laptop too A6JC, still working just fine. It has passed some big crash tests and survived :)
My desktop with P4 3GHz wears an asus board for some much more years and survives too but didn't have the crash tests though - fortunately.

Clintonio, how did you get around that 64bit issue? My cpu is a core duo 1.73GHz and although intel said it's not 64bit capable when they released it, some time after they admited it is. However yesterday I tried to intall 64bit win7 on it and installer complained it's not 64bit capable just as the win7 sysinfo displays.

I also have to agree with HP being bottom, they are not good, not good at all.
