Red Hat Embedded Linux for Hitachi SuperH
Ever since Linus Torvalds put Linux out into the public domain in October 1991, the buzz has increased from the whispers of a collegiate UNIX crowd to an OS that is now becoming extremely popular for a number of consumer devices, the most prominent being set-top boxes. Its simplicity and stability are said to make it a match made in heaven for people who wish to avoid the Blue Screen of Death. Red Hat (incidentally, the first Linux company to go public) just announced that it will extend its Embedded Linux, eCos RTOS, and RedBoot firmware support offerings and engineering services to include Hitachi's SuperH architecture. Target markets for the SuperH include Internet Appliances, PDAs, consumer devices and automotive applications. Red Hat will offer support for developers that are creating SuperH applications and products based on its products. The new eCos Hitachi DevKit will also contain GNUPro, an embedded development tool. So much for the spare time hobby of a college kid.
