Real offshore databanking?
A group of young, high-tech executives, most resembling characters from a Neal Stephenson novel, have partnered with the owners of a WWII gun platform anchored 10 kilometers off England's east coast to establish a data haven free of all national restriction or taxes. The platform's royal family claims national sovereignty and calls the structure Sealand. The data side of the data haven partnership is called HavenCo and it has plans to put banks of secure servers on the platform in coming months. Despite statements by British authorities to the extent that they expect Sealand to obey British laws as well as ominous hints by the U.S. State Department that they would take part in appropriate police actions, the project seems to be going forward.
