This GPS application may be a little more tolerable than having a tracking device in your cell phone strictly because it's targeted at professionals who need to carry two-way radios. If you're a police officer or a park ranger, you probably want your coworkers to know where you are if you get into trouble. This week, CyTerra showed off the newest version of its RadioTrac GPS gadget which is intended to be used in hand-held, two-way radio systems. RadioTrac systems include a base station, a miniature GPS transceiver with encoding/decoding techniques, and CyTerra's proprietary mapping software. The miniature GPS transceiver, which is plugged into the user's hand-held radio, measures 2"x2 1/2"x1" and is designed to be worn by field personnel, forestry rangers or any group that normally performs field operations. The RadioTrac base monitor can be stationary (installed in an office) or connected to a 12-volt battery system in an automobile. It can be completely portable when connected to a laptop computer and its own self-contained battery pack. RadioTrac systems are available now at a suggested price of $899 for the base monitor and $599 for each mobile unit. Your boss will still know where you are, but in some cases, that can be a good thing.
