Apple Ditches Nvidia, Goes ATI-only for Desktops
Apple using Radeons across the board for iMac and Mac Pro.
If you take a closer look at the Mac Pro and iMac refreshes this week, you'll notice that Apple has ditched Nvidia graphic parts in favor of strictly choosing ATI GPUs.
From a technology perspective, Nvidia right now has the shinier bullet point list with its Fermi-based chips, but all iMac and Mac Pro options are comprised of ATI's Evergreen family.
That's not to say that Apple as switched sides, as the company employs Nvidia chipsets and GPUs across the entire MacBook, starting with the GeForce 320M in the 13-inch MacBooks to the GeForce 330M discrete part in the MacBook Pros.
This could be a sign, however, that Apple and AMD are forming a stronger relationship. Earlier this year, rumors did the rounds that Apple may be considering using AMD CPUs in its upcoming computers.

not so surprising with that kind of heat and power consumption
It doesn't really matter in the end. Its taken Apple about 9 months to adapt to the latest chips behind all Windows based manufacturers. At least they're not calling the 5870 'magical and revolutionary', eh.
Oh but it is magical!
AMD / ATI must be rubbing their hands together at the thought of all those apple fanboys out their parting with their cash for an out of date PC substitute.
Sure PC's have their problems (Windows usually), but woudl you settle for previous gen tech in your £1000 PC / MAC ?

Exactly. Especially in the GPU department they're miles behind the Windows OEMS. Until a few days ago, the best they had in their iMac was a 4850. Now it's a 5750...
Given Apple presents the iMac as the home usage Mac, you'd think they would cater a bit more towards gamers, as no other group of home users pays so much for their hardware and upgrades so frequently.
You'd have to buy a MacPro to get a decent gaming GPU, but a workstation is financially out of reach for most gamers...
Ditching is a bit of an over statement, Apple will use whatever gives them the best performance for their dollar. They chop and change all the time..

I can tell you have not got a recent nvidia, what a load of baloney ...mines cooler than any prevous generation of nvidia i have had ...Fanboi's eh!! xD
You don't buy apples to play games. You barely buy them to use as a computer. If it wasn't for the fact that they became the standard for the media industry we wouldn't be hearing about Apple at all. To surf the web for pretty things and write the odd email/facebook status update you don't need the latest tech. At least it looks pretty turned off.

but apple doesn't use the latest chips, so the previes commentor was right, the 7800GT had massive heat/performance issues

Ahh sox, i had two 8800GT in SLI before my GTX480 they were pretty good, i completely missed out the 7 series on purpose and alo the GT2xx series in between, they were not worth the money at the time, i buy pretty carfully normally
Typical of apple to sell "old hat" in a nice case for big money though eh?

But that's the thing - Macs aren't the standard for the media industry. The SOFTWARE is, but media types are too lazy, too stupid, too ignorant or too superficial to consider anything other than the shiny aluminium box because that's what they were told to use, or what USED to be the best option 15 years ago.
Photo manipulation? Photoshop. Mac exclusive? No.
Digital effects and compositing? Combustion or After Effects. Mac exclusive? No.
Video editing? Avid or Premiere Pro. Mac exclusive? No. Sony Vegas is making some headway too and that's not even available for the Mac.
Everybody in media is stuck with the Mac mentality because either A: they used Macs in the 80s when they WERE the system of choice B: were educated by designers who used Macs in the 80s C: had a minor discount from Apple to get some kit in and have blindly used Macs ever since D: don't know anything about computers but are too lazy or too proud to actually ask somebody who does.
It pisses me off beyond belief when all these students and graduates who come to do experience and placements with me instantly poo-poo everything we do (and our professionalism) just because "we don't use Macs", yet they see Photoshop and After Effects running and see my £1,000 workstations PISS over everything their £3,000 MacPros.
But they switch off and ignore it because "my lecturer said Macs are best".
I'm ending this rant here lol there's too much I could go over!

Couldn't agree with you more. With reference to Santfu's comment about Macs being the industry standard, they are simply the PERCIEVED industry standard. Its been proven time and time again windows machines can do the same job macs do for cheaper and often better.
With regards to the news of ATI in the desktops themselves. The type of people who use macs won't care whether its Nvidia or ATI at all, so long as theres a picture on the screen they'll be happy. Only true enthusiasts/people who know what they're on about can scrutinise and tell the true differences between Nvidia and ATI.
anyway.... enough apple news, Im sick to death of reading crap about apple products everyday. So far none of the offerings have tempted me away from my nokia phone / sony mp3 player / vaio laptop...
I've just had another thought, and you'll have to forgive the minor conspiracy theory.
EVGA released a GTX285 for the Mac to give Macs some good processing capabilities for GPGPU apps given that Apple are in with OpenCL development. It's also a good gaming card which will give Mac Steam a good boost in being viable.
Now the 5870 is available for Macs too. This is all good in progressing Macs as a gaming platform. BUT, the 5870 is only available on the 12-core MacPro, which is primarily the big video edit system.
It's VERY suspicious to me that Apple have swung over to desktop ATI cards just when Adobe release the CUDA-accelerated Mercury Engine for CS5 video apps (which is certified to run with a GTX 285). Premiere Pro with CUDA-accelerated Mercury totally wipes the floor with Final Cut Studio, but suddenly the switch to ATI takes that option away.
"Faster than a speeding thing"? Bullshit. "Protecting sales of Final Cut Studio" more like.
Gamers don't buy Macs.
Gamers don't buy Macs.
Irrelevant. Valve and other publishers are pushing to make Macs a viable gaming platform regardless if there's a market for it. Having the Radeon 5870 available to Macs gives that platform a chance to bring in users.

correct.
besides, nothing wrong with the 5870, i have one and love it.
my rig cost me a grand.
the same thing with an Apple logo on it would have cost me 2500.
so stevie can beat it, the chimp.

The lack of a mainstream Mac with a good GPU means that hardcore gamers will never be able to make the switch to Mac, no matter how much they want to or how viable Mac OS becomes as a gaming OS.

Yeah, that's what I said. It's a step in the right direction.
But frankly the point I was making is that I find the switch to a non-CUDA GPU just when CUDA-accelerated CS5 kicks Final Cut Studio into touch to be very suspicious - anything to do with gaming was a side point.
I remember my Gf went to work at a marketing/ad agency. They asked her whether she wanted a Mac or a PC to to work on.
My Gf asked for a PC as thats what she uses. They were aghast but let her. So they allocated the same budget for the PC as the Mac they would have bought so she ended up with a quad core/8GB/300GB Raptor/GTX285/1000W PSU monster! it was about £2000 worth of PC in the end.
She was the only one with a PC. However, she didnt get to use it much as all day she would get the other Mac using staff bugging her saying "Erm can I use your PC as my Mac isnt powerful enough/wont let me...."
Well mac desktops don't sell that well but i think ATI are looking to get a partnership going with Apple which will pay of when the next GPU tecnology for there handheld thing come out. also Nvidia are really failing at the momment. the slightly over prices, under proforming GPU's arn't actually good and the only extra feature its got that Physx which is a crap feature since most games are designed to run with out it even fewer with out it. compared to ATi features
I find it very funny you pay £1000 for a imac and get a poor 256mb video card. Come on apple get your head from up your backside
Can't we just say that Macs are a rip-off? Even I'm getting tired of systematically abusing Apple fans and, historically, this is one of my favourite pastimes. Let's just let them live in their little Apple bubbles cheerily tugging themselves off to their little expanding dock thing and shiny aluminium bits whilst they live in ignorant bliss.
I for one am sick of telling them the error of their ways. I've lost count of the number of people I've told not to waste their money on this crap, and they just did it anyway. Seemingly intelligent people too. The mind boggles.
All I take notice of are the insane prices :S
Hmm maybe they cant install the bigger GPUs in the iMacs as they are -
A. Limited in internal space and would lack the cooling/airflow.
B. Due to A. they probably dont have the PSU power to do it.
The main reason would be not much on the gaming front to warrant them.
mac is to slow with hardware techno
