Asus Matrix 5870 Can OC Itself for 19% FPS Boost

Asus is making some custom upgrades to the Radeon HD 5870 for its Republic of Gamers offering.

Last month Asus showed off its new Republic of Gamers motherboard, and now we bring you a look at a video card to match it.

Asus today is showing off its RoG Matrix 5870, which is based off of the ATI Radeon 5870 GPU. Asus, however, makes things a little more interesting with some customizations.

The new Matrix 5870 features 2GB of GDDR5 RAM running at 4.8GHz and a core clock of 894MHz. Those wanting an little bit of extra oomph from the hardware but aren't comfortable dealing with tweaks themselves will appreciate Asus' Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) comes in, which can switch between intense action and normal operations automatically.

Asus claims that its SHE auto-tweaking results in an average 19 percent boost in extreme heavy-duty first person shooter titles set to max detail and a 54 percent reduction in GPU power noise when doing regular 2D graphics, all with no interruption to users.

Asus has also designed a custom cooler for the Matrix 5870, which it claims pushes 22 percent more air than the reference heatsink and fan. As a result, it runs at least 13 percent cooler than reference.

So far there's no word on pricing, but you can bet it'll cost more than a vanilla Radeon HD 5870.
