QOTD: Do You Take Your PC to LAN Parties?
We here at Tom's Hardware have been playing games for a really long time. Long before graphics was considered "graphics," we were already gaming.
It's amazing how technology has progressed in the last 25 years. These days, we don't have to leave our house to do anything. We can order milk from an online retailer--and probably toilet paper too. The Internet and all of its social mediums are changing the way we communicate. No longer do we have to do things face to face.
Or do we? I'd like to think there's always a really good side to communicating in front of someone. There's just a whole lot that you cannot communicate by words alone. A facial expression, a subtle movement of the hand or eyebrows--the list goes on. That being said:

A group of my mates regularly get together to LAN - we try for once a month. It's my main gaming time, as online gaming isn't really an option for me due to a poor connection. It makes it hard to commit to a game, especially as more and more games develop online parts of the game, and my connection isn't reliable enough to handle them. Therefore, LAN times are the only real time I get for multiplayer gaming.
Yes. Besides the fact that we pay per-MB of internet usage, we (me and a two friends) also believe it better to go out and meet people face to face. It is not really much exercise but it is better than sitting at home and becoming a fat and lazy PC slave.
Of course, I mean, the internet is wonderful and all, but nothing beats getting together with your mates, loading up on redbull, beer and pizza, and blasting some zombies/nazi's/Russians (L4D/COD5/WiC) away. To be fair I have a P6831FX laptop for this, but all my friends still use desktops. They all find it funny to watch me throw my mouse across the room in fright when I turn round the corner into a Boomer, and then scream and run around in blind panic firing like a schizophrenic on LSD as they try and protect me from the horde onslaught!
LANs are almost always the most fun I have playing computer games.
Have done once or twice but my mate's PC is dead as a do-do and he's too skint to fix it.
I now have my PC in an Antec Twelve Hundred, so it's not the most mobile of machines. It still gets dragged along when I play gigs but little else.
Yes I do, I like customizing my case and also securing the data and hard drives. Get use to playing on your own hardware. Its also a good time t see what other people do with there cases and not just play games but talk about little projects people are doing on there hardware. As far as the community that I go aroudn most gamers tinker with hardware.

Yeah I do. Largest I ever came to was about 20-25 people and only 3 laptops. But that was all before I had a proper system.
Small and perfectly formed Lan parties are great, where you get to play face to face with your buddies instead of over the internet. It is a relief to have a post mortem conversation without the headphones on. I suck at most games but at least I provide entertainment value for money to all who come along. I don't think that the Mega LAN parties offer as much community spirit as small local ones, can you really get to talk to all 8000 guests at Multiplay.
These days I pretty much play WOW and C&C with friends so I drag an old laptop around that can handle them rather than my full PC. I only take that if I'm going to be staying awhile. Probably have to upgrade the lappy before Diablo 3 and starcraft 2 come out tho.
Yeah i luv to bring my mini lan box around to lan parties. I lug a AMD 6000+ X2 with a 4870 inside and 4bg of ram. Its nice because its super light compared to my main box and it has a handle..lol... i also lug a 15.4 widescreen monitor... All my buddies luv my mini rig because its faster than most of there full size towers....
