QOTD: What's Your Favorite PC Game of All Time?
Games evolve along with the hardware that they're developed on, naturally. However, much of what makes a great game enjoyable, hasn't really changed too much.
Yes, today we've got 3D games and touch-based games, online games and everything else. Somehow though, I found myself enjoying games no more than I did when they were all in 2D. Granted, some games are incredible and only possible thanks to faster CPU, GPU and networking technology. Large scale 3D MMOs for example, wouldn't be possible with slow 14.4 kbps dial-up connections of the past.
Yet, the games that grab attention in my memory the most aren't any of the games available today. Some of mine:
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Return to Zork
- Quake 2
- Unreal
- Dune 2
- Warcraft 2
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear
However, my favorite old PC game of all time, is Flashback. For those who did play Flashback, you'll know why.
The question of the day is: What's your favorite PC game of all time?

Mmm from Wolfenstein to Doom but the ultimate game of all time was Half Life with that claw.. it scared the crap out of me in that chamber - big time... I still dare anyone to run around that at full blast with the lights out...
Half. Life.
pity they didn't make a sequel to flashback - although some games got a remake from that era such as one of my favorites Tex Murphy even the remake systems have moved on bring back the old traditional games for the new platforms we need them, Keeps us Sain!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's just so many cherished games, one wouldn't know where to start.
Will probably think of some more titles but you could fill pages..
Suffice to say, most of my enjoyment was provided by early hardware, such as the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, with games like Manic Miner. You could purchase these games from all over the place, including petrol stations for as little as £2. I missed a lot of school when I first got into gaming, but learned a lot about computers in a short space of time (more so than they taught us at school). This is how millions of people in the UK got hooked..
I also have fond memories of the Commodore Amiga and it's super-duper chipsets providing some pretty awesome stuff, like Shadow of the Beast and Sword of Sodan. The unquestionable early console king in my book was Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on the SEGA Megadrive/Genesis. Or what about Alpha Mission II on the SNK Neo Geo..remember that? Pure arcade experience in your home and a good way of emptying your wallet in no time at all lol.
For the PC, I have to say that most of my time has been spent on older titles, like Call of Duty, Star Wars: Quake, or even older one's like Interstate '76. Despite the online nature of most games and of course, their accompanying visuals I still prefer older titles, it was great to be part of the 80's and 90's scene when a lot of this stuff was so new..oh, the fights we used to have over our Spectrum were unreal lol
Secret of Monkey Island & Doom
Fallout 2
oh and carmageddon !
diablo 2
There were a lot of good games I still enjoy playing (but don't have time to do so)... But the game I return most often is GTA4 on PS2.
Hmm difficult one, depends on the system I suppose:
Megadrive - Alien 3, Flashback
PC - Doom, Command & Conquer, Rainbow Six series, Far Cry, WoW
Xbox - Halo, Sega GT, Fable
Xbox360 - Rainbow Six: Vegas 1/2, Gears of War 1/2
These would be the games I played/still play the most.
Oh and DukeNukem3D and Quake 2 of course.
Deus Ex
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Half Life
Syndicate
Fallout 2
Max Payne
(I played Flashback on Sega Megadrive / Genesis !)
destruction derby!
Aliens Vs Predator Gold edition. Talk about atmospheric multiplayer.
Group up Lan party, dark room. One person is the Alien.
stand in a big, dark room, back to back with your buddys. With nothing but flares and crappy torches to see and....
Kill each other as the alien drops into the middle of you all.
Awesome stuff.
Dungeon Keeper. I played it so much I would get flashbacks when I went back out to the real world. Warcraft 2 also ranks very highly as does Quake 3.
For PC... has to be Quake 3 Arena, and Command & Conquer, the games that started my online experience.
Frontier Elite 2
Diablo 2 (and 1)
I have to agree with almost all of these posts as I have played all the games listed here.... I suppose that’s what happens when you are a older gamer .... some of the games that stood out the most for me were definitely
Max Payne 1 awesome, awesome game...... especially the hard mode
Maniac Mansion,Flash back , Abes oddesy , Mario Bros, Clive Barker Undying, Alone in the Dark 1 , Alone in the dark 2, Half Life the full series , quake , and of course for multiplayer action quake
sorry for the double post damb refresh
Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour expansion pack. 6 years old and still playing 2 or 3 times a week!
Carmeggedon II was also very very good. Used to love playing that. We need a new version quick.
Of the modern crop, I like the CoD series although I think CoD2 was the best.
one of the most atmospheric game i ever played and loved i remember playing it during the winter and i realy connected with the game

max payne
swat4 wich i play in multiplayer even now after so many years i love the game probably because im good at it
medal of honour allied assault wich was something new at that time
mafia
lineage 2
System Shock 2 is the best game in the world, they should do a propper remake.
Oh I also for two others - Battlefield 1942 with the Desert Combat mod and Dark Forces 1 and 2 - so many hours wasted there.
Original Half Life. Looks shocking now but the gameplay just keeps calling me back.
Oh and They Hunger is brilliant too, not a game of course just a 3 part conversion for HL.
Best games written: Original Elite and Doom.
Streets of Rage. I used to play it on my master system. I got it again on the mega drive collection for PS3 and I still love playing it.
Diablo 2
there are many games that stick in my head, even after so many years.
i think the most fun in one game alone is flashback (again), this was a truly amazing game, the scenery was breath taking for its time, and no other game looked like it or played so well.
there are so many other games like
Starcraft
Warcraft 2
Warcraft 3
C&C series (mainly Red alert 1&2)
as u can see, i do like my strategy games, with a pinch of FPS (quake series and BF2) with a hint of Racing (Grid and NFS Most wanted)
as for one game already specified, Elite (what a game) which probably comes in at no 2 of my all time favourites,
Civilization series, Dune 2, Settlers, Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate 1&2, Hearts of Iron 2, Command & Conquer, Heroes of Might and Magic series, Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Roller Coaster Tycoon 1&2
PC: Quake 1 Painkeep (can o beans anyone!)
ZX: Halls Of The Things
Playing Doom III with the lights turned off and whilst listening through a pair of headphones..man, can that gave give your heart a good workout..
Morrowind definately, FreeSpace of course, Age of Empires 2, Warcraft 3, and probably Half Life or Deus Ex.
