Environmentalists push for a ban on outdoor heaters
The fight against global warming could see outdoor heaters in pubs and bars banned.
Environmentalists have called for a ban on the heaters following B&Qs decision to stop stocking the carbon emitting heaters.
B&Q has said that it will no longer stock outdoor heaters after the summer. The move is part of the DIY store’s initiative to be ’One Planet Living’ business.
Naturally, the environmentalists all got a bit excited about this, started campaigning for a complete ban on outdoor heaters and are now urging the First Minister Alex Salmond to learn by example and ban them completely.
The smoking ban came into operation in 2006/7 and since then many pubs and bars have spent considerable amounts of money ensuring that there is a comfortable area for smokers on the premises.
It has been claimed that the UK bar and catering industry could stand to lose £250 million per year if the ban on heaters goes ahead.

Infra-red heaters? That's what we use.
Which reports are these? I would be interested in reading them.
Enviro-MENTALISTS! these people are nutters.
The Sun is causing climate change not CO2 (also know as plant food). Do some research people before we get the big carbon tax.
Whoops, perhaps that should have been "it has been claimed". . .My apologies.
Anyway, the publican market report 2007 is what you're looking for. Unfortunately, you have to pay for it.
However, some details of the report can be found in a similar article on The Wharf. I'll chuck a link into the article.
"The estimated financial impact on the pub and catering industry of a patio heater ban is set out in The Publican Market Report 2007. It said the pub trade invested up to £86.5 million on outdoor heaters in the last year to attract customers after the smoking ban obliged them to drink out of doors if they wanted to carry on smoking.
If the ban being urged by some MEPs was approved, that money would have been wasted, it warned.
More serious, though, said the report, is the potential long-term loss of income for pubs, cafes and restaurants which rely on an all-weather outside area to increase profits. Even if only 10% of the UK pub trade has outdoor facilities, a patio heater ban would effectively restrict outside dining for six months of the year - costing the licensing and catering industry up to £250 million each year, or as much as £45,000 a year for a single business."
