40nm RSX Allows for Lightest, Most Efficient PS3

PS3's RSX GPU Gets 40nm Die Shrink; Even Lighter.

As part of the usual improvements throughout the console life cycle, Sony has updated the design of its PS3 Slim.

The major change this time wasn't a new feature or a new form factor, but rather a die shrink for its Nvidia-designed RSX GPU. The chip has shrunk from 65nm to 40nm, resulting in a reduction in both weight, heat, and power consumption.

A teardown narrated by Japanese site PocketNews examines the power requirements and updated (and simplified) designs for the cooling system. Compared to the original launch console, the new 40nm RSX-packing model CECH-2100A weighs nearly half of the first PlayStation 3 design.

Perhaps equally remarkable is that the new model weighs significantly less than the PS3 Slim model unveiled last fall. The latest design, with its simpler cooling and lighter power supply, weighs 408g, while the PS3 Slim launched last year weighs 545g.

Expectedly, the die shrink has reduced power consumption by around 15 percent – an improvement in all powered-states. When powered off, the console still draws 9W.

All I got from this was, "We have those scales in our house!" I need to get more.

Ps: I care what mark I get for this. Always have. Today I would like a 3.

I think the main question is that does FFXIII run smoother? ;)

They should overclock the RSX to get rid of annoying dips in framerate, make all games can run at 30fps solid.

Insert a mobility Radeon 5870 in there... and make it somewhat worthwhile...

Can't do it unfortunately since all consoles have to have the same baseline performance. If devs got used to new & faster chips in updated consoles there's a chance they might overlook the older and slower versions- resulting in games that are to all intents and purposes unplayable on older PS3s. Sony wouldn't want to deal with the fallout from that one!

Shame that they even bother to put the RSX into the console at all. That was the biggest cock up with the PS3, to saddle it with a a so limited GPU that everything fancy now has to bypass it and be done in the Cell.

Must be a bit embarrassing for Nvidia.
