Post-E3 Gaming Explosion : Fight Club (XBox/PS2)
Despite numerous delays and the fact that Brad Pitt and Edward Norton have yet to sign on, this title still looks very intriguing. The developers at Genuine Games have been taking the time to get this one right.
The fighting game genre has some major franchises already established, which have a strong fan base. From the soon-to-be-released Mortal Kombat: Deception to Tekken 5, the competition is fierce and Tyler Durden has stepped in to see who taps out first.
Now we know by writing about this game we are breaking the first two rules of Fight Club, but we are that excited about this title and so we are willing to accept the consequences. That being said lets get down to business. This game has the typical modes found in a fighting game. Fight Clubs expect Arcade, versus, survival, training, story, and also an online mode. The arcade, versus, survival, training, and online are all pretty much straight forward; it's the story mode that has us the most excited.

Different fighting styles will be featured.
You start out as Jack, and follow the plot of the movie with only one goal to find out who Tyler Durden is. Jack goes from city to city, fighting and gaining clues leading him closer and closer to solving the mystery that is Tyler. While hunting for clues, Jack will have to engage in fisticuffs with some of the popular flick's more recognizable characters. Being a fan of the movie, we were excited when we learned this as we hope to go toe to toe with Bob and his noticeable Gynecomastia.
The game's controls include your typical punches and kicks, along with combos and three fighting styles unique to the specific characters. For instance, Tyler had more of a martial arts type of style whereas Jack was more squared off and rigid with the moves of a traditional street fighter. The demonstration only provided two playable characters, Tyler and Jack.

Broken bones will affect your ability to brawl.
Though limited to just the two players, we were shown many elements interesting enough to make up for only being shown the two. To begin with, the characters experienced bruising of the knuckles and real-time facial and skeletal deformation that dramatically affected gameplay. No matter how many teeth got knocked out of our head or how bloodied our in-game shirt got, we always looked forward to seeing the effect of our bone breaking thanks to the special x-ray effect. Fighters can put the hurt on one another and arm wrench their opponent then witness their foes bone break in a Clark Kent moment true to the films strange style. This effect really made the game stand out, but wasn't the only feature that piqued our interest. Similar to a gameplay element seen in footage of the upcoming Dead or Alive Ultimate, there is seamless environment shifting that takes place in Fight Club. Gamers can take their foe, and toss them through a window and bam! the in-game level transition from one arena to another takes place. It is a wondrous sight to behold. In the demo we saw, Tyler and Jack were fighting outside in a parking lot then one of them was thrown through a window and into the bar. The transition between brawling outdoors to taking it inside was seamless.
This title has some promise, to say the least. Vivendi Universal has begun with a franchise the public is familiar with and built upon that with some strong gameplay, interactive environments and real-time special effects. On October 18, 2004 plan to stop sliding with your power animal, shave your head like a space monkey and join the club.
