PlayStation2 sales fall shy of target

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Sony says it has sold 980,000 PlayStation2 video game consoles in the three days since the product debuted in Japan - 20,000 fewer than it expected.

The company had planned to ship 1 million of the devices in the first weekend of sales, but it now says it expects to reach that goal by March 15.

A shortage of memory cards delayed some shipments by as much as 10 days, the company said.

The PS2 features a 128-bit processor and a digital versatile disk player capable of playing feature-length movies and compact discs.
