Photon cages may lead to microprocessor revolution
Two researchers in Canada have created a silicon-based material that could replace electrons with photons in future processors, resulting in processing performance thousands of times faster than today's fastest technology. Working together, a theoretical physicist and a materials chemist have succeeded in growing 3D silicon structures using opals. While other groups have spent millions searching for a material that would channel photons, the cost of this process, they says, is, "dirt cheap."
