Philips Shows off Display and Wireless Toys
While conferences are being cancelled right and left here in the States because of travel fears, those in Europe and Asia seem, for the most part, to be going on as planned. In Chiba Japan, the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC ) is in effect and Philips is busy showing off new display and wireless gadgets, including its advanced color adjustable technology for transflective liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Philips says the new technology gives the screens greater luminance and color saturation. The company will also be demonstrating a color, high-resolution, electronic ink display prototype for handheld devices, which is supposed to help OEMs create mobile products that have a higher resolution along with reduced power consumption. Philips' wireless showpieces include a one-piece, Bluetooth wireless headset that doesn't use a boom, as well as wireless connectivity modules that let you to create a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) with Bluetooth and 802.11b connectivity solutions. The company's Connectivity Group will also demonstrate a Bluetooth CompactFlash card module for Windows CE that can be used in PDAs, handhelds, and other devices. Also being paraded around are Philips' embedded mini PCI modules, a PC-to-PC Bluetooth demo, and a wireless 802.11b web pad connecting to a Philips access point-providing wireless local area network (LAN) access and embedded wireless connectivity. As for other display technologies, the company is showing a proprietary passive-matrix polymer-based organic light emitting diode (PolyLED) technology and its low-power, color TFT-LCD technology for mobile phone applications, along with a 4" 3D color LCD and 8.4" color LCD for mobile gaming applications that features Philips' lenticular auto stereoscopic display. The 3D display has a wide viewing angle, SVG resolution and cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting capabilities.
