Philips and Mitsubishi Work Together on Small-Panel LTPS Displays
Computex is an interesting and important event, but the other conferences that are going on at the same time tend to get overshadowed a bit. Right now, at the SID Symposium, all of the display gearheads are working hard to make the gadgets better, cheaper, and faster. If you bear in mind that the display on any device is one of the most expensive and indispensable components, you really start to care what these folks are doing. Yesterday, Philips and Mitsubishi signed a "memorandum of understanding" for the supply of low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) active matrix LCDs. Under the terms of the agreement, Mitsubishi will supply LTPS panels to Philips for small-panel mobile display applications. With the supply of LTPS panels from Mitsubishi, Philips will amp up its position in small-scale applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, and other handheld devices. What this really means is that two of the biggest players in this field are now playing nicely together. The result could be visually stimulating.
