Philips builds first 65nm SoC aimed at consumer electronics
The chip, which the Philips claims is the first 65 nm system-on-chip for mobile multimedia and home entertainment products, is based on ARM’s ARM1176JZF-S architecture and comes with 512 kB of memory, communication ports and key analog IP blocks.
The company said that the technology is already in an "advanced stage of development," hinting that the next generation of products, such as 3G phones or high-end TVs could be equipped with the device. According to ARM’s website, the ARM1176JZF-S can be clocked with up to 550 MHz and typically consumes about 0.8 mW per MHz in cache-supported versions.
Philips mentioned that the chips low power consumption as well as the integration of TrustZone DRM were key decision factors for the company to choose the ARM chip for its next-generation consumer electronics products.
