Overclocking – Newer Versions from other Sources?

It can prove very worthwhile to check other motherboard companies’ websites for newer versions which may offer better compatibility.

Sometimes newer versions of the tool find their way onto the internet through other channels. With just a little searching, we were able to find much more recent versions of the utility than those offered by the motherboard makers.

Other applications such as CrystalCPUID that allow you to change AMD CPU’s multiplier from within Windows have been available for a while. For now, CrystalCPUID does not support Phenom CPUs yet, though.

We find ourselves rather disappointed by the way AMD is supporting this tool. On the one hand, the OverDrive tool is one of the advertised features of the Phenom CPU, but on the other hand, AMD does not offer the tool itself. Users have to dig through the motherboard makers’ support sites. And even here, the versions differ from one company to the next – and it is hard to tell which is the most recent. In the end, it is up to the user to search and find the newest one.

This is an embarrassment for AMD. It's actually worse that they released the Black Edition of this processor because it shows that even with all the tricks, AMD is currently not even posing as competition for Intel. I don't know what AMD will be able to do to keep going; it seems like no matter what they try they are still way behind Intel.

At least when Intel was beating AMD in performance in the early days of the P2, at least AMD was still a viable option because of their price/performance ratio.

I hope they come up with something though; I don't want Intel to be the only product and raise their prices.

Poor AMD. I liked you a lot but Intel are truly kicking your butts. Hopefully this is just a Rocky feint and they will be back with a vengence soon
