Sunnyvale (CA) - Palm today announced the Treo 700wx mobile smartphone, the latest offering in its line of PDA phones that are available for the the firm’s "Power Vision Network." It will run on the Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system, making it the first Windows Mobile Treo phone offered by Sprint, according to Palm.

Earlier in the year, Palm released the Sprint Treo 700p smartphone, which is powered by Palm’s proprietary operating system. The new 700wx, running on Windows Mobile, is meant to complement the 700p.

"For customers who prefer to have Microsoft’s Windows operating system applied across all their corporate computing assets, the new Treo 700wx gives users a convenient way to access their business-critical and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents at broadbandlike (sic) download speeds to make just about anyplace a work place," said Danny Bowman, Sprint’s vice president of marketing.

Like other Treo devices, the 700wx contains features such as push e-mail, a slew of productivity applications, and out-of-the-box USB functionality, which allows users to link the phone to a computer to access the Internet through the mobile phone connection.

Document viewers for Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF, are pre-installed on the 700wx. It is also equipped with a 1.3 megapixel digital camera and digital camcorder. Downloads and pictures can be saved to the phone’s internal memory, or onto an SD, SDIO, or MMC card via the built-in memory card slot.

The Palm Treo 700wx, which is available now in Sprint stores, is priced at about $500 with a service agreement.
