P2P vanguard rejects Intel lead
Over 300 developers responded to Intel Corp.'s invitation to discuss peer-to-peer computing last week. Intel has previously issued statements saying that P2P is in the same category of breakthrough as the Web browser, and the company clearly wants to play a central role in P2P development. Attendees, however, made it obvious that the group would not accept the chipmaker's lead, and forced Intel planners to abandon their initial organizational blueprint. Openly skeptical and at times hostile toward Intel, many there supported a model based on the Internet Engineering Task Force. One developer said that Intel must understand that P2P is "a meritocracy of geeks." Intel's P2P evangelist said, "This is a little rougher than I thought it would be."
