Die-Shot: Next-Gen 8-Core AMD Orochi Bulldozer

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

This is the eight-core version of Bulldozer.

In August AMD gave us a brief preview of what's to come from its next-generation technology known as Bulldozer.

Now we get to see one of the first early die-shots from an eight-core "Orochi" processor that's based on Bulldozer technology and built on the 32nm process.

Unlike Llano, this chip won't be a part of the Fusion initiative to integrate the GPU inside the die. But also unlike Llano, Bulldozer is based on next-generation AMD technology, while Llano shares its ties with Phenom CPUs.

Either way, we're expecting big things from AMD in 2011.

Is it 2011 yet? Get it benched already!

I'm not laying down my next 10-year investment until I see this thing in action.

With AMD's new 8,12 & 16 core cpu's in the pipeline along with the new 6000 series of radeons. Intel and Nvidia must be cacking themselves. I see AMD back at the top end of PC gaming platforms very soon :)

Nvidia are already cacking themselves and Intel won't be bothered until AMD eats into Intel's market share, which will only happen when AMD released a CPU superior to anything Intel has.

Fingers-crossed Bulldozer vs Sandy Bridge makes significant strides towards that end.

Why would Nvidia be worried? They just released some excellent mobile GPU's, fare very well in scientific computing and workstations and have enough cash to survive a failed discrete generation.

Exactly, Nvidia are doing very well actually. Tegra 2 has a lot of popularity with mobile manufacturers, The GTX 460 has somewhat redeemed Fermi and they are still to be found quite a lot in notebooks and laptops, especially with the new Optimus technology. Mind you i'd really like to see AMD come out with an ARM offering for the mobile market to see how Tegra 2 shapes up under pressure.
