Open-source evolution: Apple releases Darwin 1.0
Hoping to popularize its upcoming Macintosh operating system, Mac OS X, Apple Computer released version 1.0 of its Darwin open-source server project to software developers.
With Darwin, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company also hopes to expand its influence in multimedia streaming software by allowing Windows-based servers to stream multimedia content using Apple's QuickTime.
In addition, Apple announced the addition of ten new content partners, including as Sony Music Entertainment, to its QuickTime TV "network" offering streaming, full-length videos.
