Off-the-shelf quantum computers

by - source: Tom's Hardware

The race to develop quantum computers has, thus far, centered on the harnessing of molecule-sized q-bits capable of maintaining the multiple states needed for developing non-binary algorithms. One problem with this approach is cost due to the need to keep components at temperatures near absolute zero.

Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratories say, however, that there is a simpler way to take advantage of the particle-wave paradox. They believe it is possible to build room-temperature quantum computers using existing optical components. Beam splitters, phase shifters and photodetectors, the say, can produce usable feedback which can be used to induce nonlinear coupling among qubits, The group is freely sharing their blueprint with other scientist working on quantum computing in hopes of accelerating the development process.
