OEMs Give Hyperthreading Mixed Reviews

by - source: Tom's Hardware

While numerous OEMs have supported the launch of Intel's new hyperthreading-enabled 3.06 GHz Pentium 4, whether or not the feature will be useful remains a subject of debate.

OEMs like Dell and Gateway appear poised to highlight the technology's advantages in advertisements and other promotions. But interestingly, one "enthusiast" OEM - who might have been thought as a strong backer of any new technology - characterized the improvement as only a slight one.

The new processor combines two elements: the "nice round number" of 3.0 GHz, and the hyperthreading technology, which has been heavily touted by Intel throughout the past year. Hyperthreading requires a multithreaded OS and/or applications, each consisting of more than one chain or thread of instructions. The hyperthreading technology in the current 3.06 GHz processor allows the processor to work on two threads at once, capitalizing on the tendency that applications have to work on chunks of intermittent data, rather than a single uninterrupted stream.
