O2 Connect Allows You to Make Calls Over WiFi

by - source: O2

O2 has announced the trial of a new service called O2 connect that will provide customers with VoIP services.

Many of us are already familiar with VoIP services on our phones. With the likes of Skype and Tango doing such a good job, it's easy to see why a lot of people have ditched their landline service in favour of VoIP. Now, O2 is embracing the VoIP way, too. The company today announced that it would begin testing O2 Connect, a service that allows customers to make calls and send texts over WiFi from their O2 number.

The trial is limited and only available by invitation. However, if you're lucky enough to be attending Wired 2011, you'll also be given the chance to participate. If all goes well, the carrier will be rolling this out to all customers in 2012.

"This trial will allow us to explore the potential of delivering VoIP services to customers. We hope to launch O2 Connect as a commercial service in 2012," explained Richard Porter, Head of Consumer Mobile Products, at O2 UK.

O2 Connect will initially only be available on iOS and Android smartphones. O2 is planning a subsequent extension to include other devices, but it's not clear whether it will be iOS/Android only for the duration of the trial or if support will be added for additional devices before the trial is over.

Key word here is "commercial". Hints at calls not being free but will it compete with BT/telecom prices?
