Nvidia Fermi Production and Availability

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Just a quick update regarding more information on Nvidia's upcoming Fermi GPU:

We received word from an Nvidia partner that Fermi will go into production starting in the 3rd week of February, and be available in "low quantities" starting mid-march.

According to our source, Fermi's yield will be low but not any worst than what AMD/ATI is experiencing. TSMC, the company producing Radeon HD 5800 series at 40nm, is "happy at 4-percent yield," said our source.

Nvidia's Fermi GPU will be the company's first DX11 GPU.

Only 4% yield? That means 96% of chips manufactured get binned …? Is that why they're so expensive?

"happy at 4-percent yield" LOL

then why, if I remember correctly, were they only a few months back trying to claim they were closer to sub 30% yields.....!?!?

More "positive spin" that went nowhere, so now trying to pretend they are happy at 4%. If they haven't improved yields since way back then (they released a 4% figure too months back), then things are looking very bad for NVidia's new "Thermi" production process sadly!

I hope the 4 percent is a typo and you mean 40%.....

So from my understanding of this article-and from the comments:))- at every 100 chips produced, Nvidia only ships 4? Or, what? I hope that somehow, they can recycle(laugh) the unused chips because otherwise is a totally waste of resources. My personal opnion is that Nvidia was caught short-handed by ATI with their 5970, and now they are trying to catch up by releasing the new chip as soon as possible even with, apparently, huge loses in terms of discarded chips. Forza Steaua!!!

Yeah, they do recycle them. Most commonly they are used to make cheaper solar cells.

At a 500kg order it sells for USD $220 per KG

Haha i think the Solar Power market will be more profitable for NVIDIA considering that ATI has a pretty strong hold on the gfx one :P

4 percent?

thats abysmal. is this why fermi is said to run so hot? because they only chips they can get working have to be pumped with high voltages?

You are reading the post wrong. That quote is TSMC is quoting it's yield of AMD 5800 series chips chips as 4-percent. To make the point of Nvidia's statement of "low quantities" as they are getting similar quantities.

This being toms I would assume it's a typo and means 40%
