Novell to provide usability testing platform for open source developers
Novell today announced its "Better Desktop initiative," a new component of the firm’s openSUSE project, which aims to provide open source developers "usability testing data and resources" to support an improved "quality" of the Linux desktop.
The company said it is releasing primary desktop research, including video footage and analysis of usability tests, at betterdesktop.openSUSE.org. Instructions for constructing and operating a low-cost usability lab will also be provided. Novell hopes that open source developers will take advantage of the data published to develop designs that "succeed with end users."
According to the company, the openSUSE project has received more than four million page views within the first eight weeks of its existence and about 7000 Linux users have registered.
