New And Future Upgrades
Sony's latest firmware offering is v2.60, which offers only slight improvements on the firmware. These include support for Chinese characters on the Internet browser and support for WPA wireless connectivity. However, these are not very important to most average users; and Chinese character support has been integrated since v2. This small amount of visible tweaking adds little, while increases the possibility of more bugs and security holes that will need to be quashed later.
Future upgrades would be well served to add more useful original functionality to the PSP, such as the Internet browser added in v2.0, to entice gamers away from the shaky legal ground of homebrew. This will be a difficult task, as the average user is not concerned with constant updating, a process which can be hazardous. A number of users have encountered power cuts while updating firmware, which results in a PSP without a fully functioning operating system, making it entirely useless. Sony's customer support provides little help, having yet to compile a list of places where this problem can be fixed. This leaves users with an expensive paperweight, at least until they have a list of contacts, which Sony assure customers will be "any week now."
Unfortunately for legitimate and talented homebrew programmers, there exist the immoral individuals who wish to play commercial games for free. To this end they have created programs to exploit older versions of the firmware. Any PSP firmware before v2.0 detects a memory card as a UMD (the PSP's native media) allowing it to run programs. This can be exploited to allow the playing of images of PSP games. Sony has been quick to act on this, releasing firmware upgrades that begin to focus more on patching security holes than anything else.
