Nokia and Sony Ericsson set aside differences on handheld DTV

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Morningstar is carrying a press release issued through Dow Jones stating that mobile manufacturers Nokia and Sony Ericsson have reached a deal to cooperate on building devices and services around the emerging DVB-H standard. Although DVB-H is based on the European DTV standard, not the American, the standard appears to be the front runner for mobile broadcast digital TV in the US, where scalability of DTV standards lags a few years behind Europe.

Sony Ericsson and Nokia said they recognize DVB-H as the preferred technology for terrestrial digital broadcast mobile TV, with both parties being active in ongoing standardization and technology development to enable an improved mobile TV experience for the consumers.

This announcement is also important for the fact that it formally implies, for the first time, that there actually was some disagreement between the two European mobile giants on this matter.
