Nokia promotes environmental conservation plan

by - source: Tom's Hardware

A group of European mobile phone manufacturers have teamed up with recycling companies and environmental organizations to launch an environmental awareness program. Led by Nokia, the initiative aims to improve cell phone recycling, conserve energy when charging phones, and scale back on hazardous materials in manufacturing.

One planned change to the cell phone operating systems is to give users a warning when the battery is finished being charged, urging them to remove the mobile phone from the outlet to prevent wasted electricity from continued charging. The committed manufacturers have also pledged to halt production of cell phones with hazardous materials.

Additionally, the companies said they to increase incentives and awareness for recycling old cell phones.
