No Modems, no Cable VoIP
Many discussions have taken place about voice over IP but few words have actually spanned the wires using the technology - especially if the transport medium of choice is cable. A story last week on EETimes.com says that, while most cable operators have upgraded two-way hybrid fiber/coax plants and specified PacketCable for real-time multimedia over cable, deployment of VoIP rests on the availability of cable modems based on version 1.1 of the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (Docsis).
