Nintendo announces download service, voice chat feature for DS

Las Vegas (NV) - Four million owners of a Nintendo DS portable gaming system in the US will soon be able to use your device for wireless game downloads and voice chats, Nintendo announced at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences’ DICE conference in Las Vegas today.

The new service, which has been available in Japan for some time and will be coming stateside within "a matter of weeks" According to the company, users will be able to use the DS’ Wi-Fi feature download game demos and "other downloadable content at thousands of participating retail locations around the United States." By choosing the "DS Download Play" on their system, gamers can select from a variety of content and can play as long as the device is turned on.

Nintendo said that EB Games, GameStop, and Game Crazy already agreed to host download stations. Target and Wal-Mart are expected to join the lineup soon.

The first downloadable games will include demos of Tetris DS, Brain Age : Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, Mario Kart DS, Meteos, True Swing Golf and Pokemon Trozei. The game selection will change quarterly, Nintendo promises.

The company will also enable a voice chat feature : The new Metroid Prime Hunters game for Nintendo DS will give gamers the ability to chat via Wi-Fi with other gamers before and after matches. The microphone of the Nintendo DS picks up voice communication and transmits it to the people on the user’s friend list.

Nintendo gave DICE attendees a first look at an upcoming, refreshed DS : The Nintendo DS Lite will go on sale in Japan next month, is about two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter. The company did not say when the DS Lite will come to the US.
