New Windows will be 'Living Room Ready'

Microsoft's forthcoming NT-kernel-based consumer Windows release is designed for a new class of PCs and devices that will become the central focus in consumers' living rooms.

Internal Microsoft documents viewed by Sm@rt Reseller and PC Week reporters indicate that the company is working on an adaptation kit for its consumer Windows version - code-named Neptune - that would supplant Windows CE as the software giant's premier development platform for "non-desktop PCs."

All part of an initiative called "Living Room Ready," Microsoft is developing a range of non-standard form factors, including a "Game PC," a "Media PC," and applications such as a videophone and an electronic TV programming guide. Living Room Ready applications will be designed to be viewed on large-screen displays from up to 10 feet away.
