New technology targets high-speed wireless Net access

by - source: Tom's Hardware

The man who invented Motorola's first mobile cellular telephone is heading up efforts to create a new portable, high-speed wireless Internet service.

Martin Cooper of ArrayComm says the technology, dubbed "i-Burst," would provide connections of about 1-megabit per second per subscriber - faster than what most subscribers get from their cable modems.

The system uses a series of so-called "smart antennae" to target and track wireless subscribers, but is not designed for fast-moving Internet access - from a moving car or train, for example. However, it could be used for portable devices built specifically for distributing music, video or any other high-bandwidth application, company officials said.
