New study uncovers massive `invisible Web'

A new study claims the Internet is 500 times larger than the maps provided by commonly-used search engines.

Using newly-developed software, BrightPlanet estimates there are 550 billion documents stored on the Web, most in giant databases set up by government agencies, universities and corporations. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based company said popular search engines like Yahoo, AltaVista and Google.com rely on technology that generally identifies "static" pages rather than the "dynamic" information stored in databases.
