NetWaiting for V.92 Modems
Ahh, the trials and tribulations of a dial-up connection. It just isn't fast enough anymore and it's not your fault that dial-up seems to get slower and slower. The Internet has succumbed to the same bloating that applications have. Now that software companies assume that you have a gigantic hard drive, they make no effort to minimize the size of applications. Similarly, now that web site purveyors think everyone has a DSL or cable line, they don't make much of an effort to build pages that load fast (THG, by the way, really does pay attention to load speed. Fredi and Mike won't let me post pictures larger than 100K - and that's the max). That little rant doesn't have a lot to do with this story, but I was thinking about it and it just blurted out (that's what always gets me into trouble). The real story is that Conexant and BVRP have announced that they have collaborated to introduce NetWaiting, a software application for V.92-based dial-up modems. It won't make pages load faster, but it can keep your friends from getting a busy signal if you're dealing with a single phone line. V.92 modems with the new NetWaiting feature notify users with Call Waiting of incoming calls while remaining on the Internet, allowing them to place the Internet "on hold" for several minutes while taking the telephone call. Users can also place the modem "on hold" and make an outgoing call without losing their Internet connection. NetWaiting also supports Caller ID service by displaying the incoming caller's phone number and identification. You can also build a database of frequent callers so that familiar names are displayed and identified. No point ditching Battle.net for a call from Grandma. NetWaiting also lets you specify call options, ignoring all incoming calls, accepting all incoming calls and disconnecting the Internet connection, or screening all incoming calls. The new app is available now in all Conexant-based V.92 modems and drivers and supports Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me and XP.
