Netscape preps Gecko-based browser

by - source: Tom's Hardware

A beta version of Netscape's long-delayed Web browser will be available within the next month.

Based on Netscape's new Gecko technology for displaying text and graphics on the Web, Netscape 6.0 is the first browser software to emerge from the company since its acquisition by AOL in 1998.

A key feature of Gecko is its use of Extensible User Interface Language, a technology for creating user interfaces with Web programming languages rather than computer coding languages.

Netscape said several companies have agreed to develop hardware and software products to support Gecko, such as set-top boxes, home appliances and other Web-based products.
