In the land of servers, IT folks have many more options for a networking OS than most of us poor grunts have for our desktop OS. Depending on how open-minded the suits in your organization are, OS options include UNIX, Windows, Linux, and the oft-overlooked NetBSD. For you non-IT folks, NetBSD is an open source BSD UNIX operating system that offers UNIX functionality across a wide range of hardware platforms. Wasabi Systems just let us know that it has completed a preliminary port of NetBSD to AMD's 64-bit x86-64 architecture, including testing it on Virtutech's VirtuHammer x86-64 simulation tool. Wasabi says it is working with AMD on building the port as part of an ongoing effort between the two companies to broaden OS support for AMD microprocessors. The x86-64 port has been committed to the source tree of the NetBSD Project and is available for download under the terms of the open source BSD license.
