NEC shows Transmeta notebook

Intel Corp. has taken another hit as Japan's largest PC maker, NEC Corp. shows off its new notebook PC based on Transmeta's 600-MHz, x86-based microprocessor line. Last month, Fujitsu, NEC and Sony launched notebooks based on Transmeta's Crusoe. Hitachi is also reportedly preparing a line of Transmeta-based notebooks.

Transmeta's strategy is to stay out of the performance market and concentrate on the lucrative low-power portable market. In fact, recent benchmarks demonstrate how much the Crusoes lag when compared to performance chips, though analysts say that such comparisons may not be valid.
