Tokyo (Japan) - NEC said it has developed a new LCD for portable devices that achieves a brightness of 550 cd/m2, which is 2.75x the brightness of a comparable conventional small form factor display.

The 2.7" QVGA (320 x 240 pixel resolution) display is based on a-Si TFT technology and promises to provide "outstanding" visibility "in any environment." The contrast ratio is rated at 400:1.

The new display is available now and will be targeting PDA and personal navigation devices as well as industrial portable equipment such as barcode scanners.
