A group of scientists at North Carolina State University (NCSU) believe that knowledge provided by genome research will enable them to design plants that can communicate with growers, sending information about their state and receiving orders to alter their characteristics even while growing. The research is aimed at providing food sources able to adapt in space mission environments, possibly under robotic care, but terrestrial applications are also in the picture.
