Napster adopts acoustic fingerprinting
Napster has announced that it will use acoustic fingerprinting technology from Relatable that will, in theory, block songs based on wavelength patterns of specific songs. The deal is meant to placate the court that has become less and less patient with the efforts of the file-sharing service to block copyrighted materials. Users have easily circumvented blocking efforts based on song titles. The company is walking a tightrope trying to keep its audience until it is ready to launch its fee-based srevice. A Relatable spokesperson admitted that it would be challenging to scale the fingerprinting technology to fit Napster.
