MySpace leads in U.S. video streaming
According to Comscore Media Metrix, a consulting firm that measures the use of digital media, MySpace is currently the top video streaming site in the U.S., at least in terms of the total number of streams initiated. The network of Yahoo sites tops the list on an international scale.
More than 106.5 million people, or about three out of every five U.S. Internet users, streamed or downloaded video in July, the research firm said. In total, nearly 7.2 billion videos were streamed or downloaded by U.S. Internet users for an average of 67 streams per streamer, which means the typical video streamer viewed an average of more than two streams per day.
The Comscore Media Metrix findings show that, in July of 2006, about 1.459 billion streams were initiated on MySpace in the U.S., resulting in a 20% market share for the social networking site. Yahoo sites ranked second in total streams initiated by U.S. users with 812 million, followed by Youtube with 649 million.
Yahoo led the ranking in terms of user count with an estimated 37.9 million streamers. MySpace attracted 37.4 million and Youtube 30.5 million. Google came in on position 8, behind Time Warner, Microsoft and Viacom, with about 7.5 million streamers.
