Music business wants CD copy-protection
The music business has been looking for a way to copy-protect CDs for years and, last month, the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) accepted final proposals for anti-copying technologies. So far, the SDMI has worked mostly on digital "watermarks" that would let copyright holders trace the source of copies and allow devices to block pirated files. SMDI has already chosen a system, created by Verance Technologies, that has been licensed by EMI, Sony Music, BMG Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. Many analysts believe, however, that the technical challenges to the creation of a publicly acceptable copy-protection scheme cannot be overcome.
