Creative Technology just told us about its Audigy audio processor and EAX ADVANCED HD, two core elements that the company intends to use in future audio developments. Creative says the new Audigy processor boasts four times the effects processing power of the company's EMU10K1 processor, which powers the Sound Blaster Live! brand of PC audio cards. The processor features a 32-bit Multi-Effects Engine, which accelerates Creative's new EAX ADVANCED HD software. For gaming, EAX ADVANCED HD allows you to listen to four simultaneous audio environments in real time; Environment Morphing, which provides an audio transition from one environment to another; Environment Panning that lets gamers to hear the 3D location of an upcoming or distant environment; Environment Reflections that allow you to hear sound bouncing off surfaces; and Environment Filtering, which uses high-pass audio filters to simulate sound as it whould be heard in indoor and outdoor environments. For game developers, the EAX ADVANCED HD game audio library supports Microsoft's Direct Sound API, the OpenAL API, the Dolby Digital 5.1 mixing API, and the EAGLE 3.0 Graphical Librarian Editor. Over at The Inquirer , Mike Magee thinks the announcement may be in response to a potential bid for Creative's business by Nvidia. Over at my desk, we think that the main goal for audio should be sound effects on FPS games that are real enough to scare the hell out of the neighbors.
