Microsoft to open dev center in Vancouver

Vancouver (British Columbia) – Microsoft has found an innovative way to get around those pesky U.S. immigration laws by announcing that it will open up a software development center in nearby Vancouver. The center will initially have 200 employees, but could grow to house hundreds more.

Microsoft’s Bill Gates tried pushing for an expanded H-1B visa program which would have let the company hire more foreign programmers, but the comprehensive Immigration reform bill stalled out in Washington D.C. last week. H-1B visas are capped at 65,000 per year for the entire US, but Canada has no such limitation on foreign work visas.

Vancouver is just a short flight from Redmond and Microsoft could easily shuttle people back and forth from the new center to its headquarters.
