Motorola's New DragonBall Processors
Motorola may not be making the big bucks putting out processors for Macs anymore, but its unlikely the company bet the farm on that endeavor anyway. Motorola has always had numerous processors on the market - some generic, some application specific. Diversify and live a long, happy life. Yesterday, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector put forth two new DragonBall microprocessors for handheld devices: DragonBall MX1 and DragonBall Super VZ. The DragonBall MX1 is targeted at high-end, wirelessly connected mobile products up to 200 MHz and provides for Bluetooth on-chip. The DragonBall Super VZ operates at a 66 MHz with improved peripheral support compared to its predecessor. Motorola says that DragonBall microprocessors are found in more than 75% of all the world's PDAs, and is used in all current products based on Palm OS. The company figures that the new DragonBall products will be used in information appliances, smart phones, Web browsers/tables, digital MP3 audio players, handheld computers, and messaging applications. DragonBall MX1 has an MSRP of $19 each in 10,000 unit quantities. DragonBall Super VZ is priced at $14 in the same quantities.
